WEKAF US National Stickfighting Championships

This weekend I was fortunate to have been able to participate in a
much anticipated event. The tournament was a meet for over 200 of the
country's best stickfighters, as they vied for a spot on the US National
Stickfighting team.

Many of my students know how involved I am in the WEKAF organization, and
how excited I am to see the project we've all been working on for so
long, realized in the form of so many competitors and exciting fights,
the displays of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the energy from the crowd
of spectators. I would again like to thank everyone who
participated.

I was able to finally meet many of the volunteers from different parts of
the country, who contributed to making this and the upcoming World
Championships possible. Some of the contributions made for these
events are nothing less than astounding.

I was also able to make a few new friends and to spend some time with
some old ones. More than the competition itself, what I will
remember most is the laughter and stories and support for a common
cause.
This is the importance of a community. There is an energizing
effect that happens when people from different parts of the country or
the world come together for a common cause. Our training takes a
new perspective, and our batteries are recharged for the future. I
think this is why many people in WEKAF participate and volunteer to the
extent that they do.

It's easy to lose sight of that when we spend much of our time training
in our own schools and clubs, smaller groups. That is why seminars
and tournaments such as these are so important, and I believe that this
is the importance of such an organization. WEKAF events offer a way
to meet and compete in a growing sport, against fellow practitioners from
your region of the US, from all over the country, and from all over the
world.

I invite you to join our community. Stop in today to start training
and open a new world of experiences.

Congratulations to Kari Schultz

At this weekend's tournament, Kari Schultz qualified for the US
National Stickfighting Team and is now eligible to represent the US in
Orlando, FL at the World Championships in July. Nick Wintergerst
and Mr. Sell also competed, Mr. Sell took third in Mens Super-heavyweight
Single Stick Fighting.

New Wednesday Workshop Topic: Panantukan/Knife

Starting this Wednesday, February 21, the focus of our Wednesday
Workshops will be a combination of Panantukan (Filipino Boxing) and Knife
training. Much of Panantukan is based on the use of a knife.
In these classes we will be training highly interactive focus mitt and
trapping drills, boxing conditioning and edged weapons use. Students will
develop their striking and footwork skills over the next six weeks, and
will gain a better appreciation for the connection between these aspects
of Kali.

This workshop is open to students of all experience levels.
Students interested in participating will need a set of focus mitts, bag
gloves and a mouthguard, a training dagger is also recommended (some are
available). We are offering sale prices on this equipment starting
today.
