Plein air painters are often enamored with landscape. I am no exception. The quality of light that you can find out of the studio is not something that you can replicate indoors, particularly the early morning or late afternoon light, long light — when sunlight is filtered through the atmosphere to become golden and warm. Given how quickly the light can change, a plein air painter has only between 1 and 5 hours (in this part of the Midwest) to capture their subject before the effect is gone. Further, the landscape undergoes so many changes due to weather, fire, construction, and urban sprawl, that our paintings often serve as a record of what once was. Below are some of the many landscapes I’ve done over the years.
